Every household in Scotland must complete the census by the end of May 2022.
The deadline for submitting Scottish census returns has been extended by a month after a record number of householders failed to complete their forms or delayed sending them. As a result, National Records of Scotland, the official data agency, have extended the deadline from Sunday 1 May by four weeks to give householders more time to complete returns.
What is it….??
Scotland’s Census usually takes place every 10 years and is the official count of every person and household in the country.
The census collects information about where you stay and the people who stay there.
The answers you give to the census questions will help shape Scotland’s future public services.
A legal responsibility….
As a householder, you have a legal responsibility to complete the questionnaire. You may be prosecuted and potentially fined if you:
- refuse to complete the questionnaire
- neglect to answer a question (other than those shown to be voluntary)
- provide a false answer to a question
- sign a false document
In some cases, you may receive a criminal record and fine.
Your responses do not otherwise affect your legal rights, obligations or status, or those of the people to whom the responses relate.
Who is responsible….??
The householder is responsible for completing the household census questionnaire.
The householder is the person who lives, or is present, at an address who:
- owns/rents (or jointly owns/rents) the accommodation and/or
- is responsible (or jointly responsible) for paying the household bills and expenses
Every household in Scotland must complete the census questionnaire, whether they are from the United Kingdom or not.
A household can be:
- one person living alone, or
- a group of people (not necessarily related) living at the same address who share cooking facilities and share a living room or sitting room or dining area.
